In 1776 author David McCullough describes a harrowing and defining year in the struggle for American Independence. It was a fascinating book to read and I found myself wondering, with all the mishaps, misguided decisions, lack of resources and lack of experience on the part of the colonists, how on earth did colonial America ever achieve independence from Britain? I especially enjoyed the wide range of letter and journal entries included in the book, which gave a first-hand account of what key figures, as well as lesser known ones, experienced during 1776. It is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to learn more about this era in American history.
