The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir
This saga of Kao Kalia Yang’s family’s journey from Laos to Saint Paul via a refugee camp in Thailand is lyrically written and a page turner. This heart-breaking tale personifies the St. Paul Hmong experience. Yang’s father took photographs of the family during the early years of their journey and these add a poignant dimension to the book. The family eventually settled in the McDonough Housing Projects in St. Paul. Yang is a poet, writer and a filmmaker. This book won the 2009 Minnesota Book Award in the memoir and creative nonfiction category. -- Barb P.
