Across The Nightingale Floor
The first in Lian Hearn's Tales of the Otori series, Across the Nightingale Floor is set in an imaginary realm that resembles feudal Japan, complete with supernatural activities, martial arts, and battling clans. The protagonist, 16-year-old Takeo, is a member of a subversive and persecuted religious group who is (not coincidentally) given refuge by Lord Otori Shigeru. After joining the Otori clan, Takeo discovers that he is also a member of the "Tribe," a shadowy group of assassins with mystical abilities. Across the Nightingale Floor is an intriguing tale with a satisfying conclusion, whetting the reader's appetite for the rest of the series. -- Elizabeth H.
