The Skull Mantra

Eliot Pattison takes the "disgraced detective" genre to new heights: all the way to The Roof of the World. On a remote Tibetan hillside a hard-labor gang finds a decapitated body. The local party officials enlist the only experienced investigator in the province, a former Beijing policeman who is now one of the convicts. Shan Tao-Yun traverses a quagmire of moral ambiguity as he searches for a politically expedient solution while honoring the truth and the Buddhist lamas who are his fellow prisoners. Readers who appreciate the cultural detail and evocative landscapes of Tony Hillerman may relish The Skull Mantra. -- János.
