The Redbreast

By Norwegian Jo Nesbø, this gripping mystery is set in Oslo and other exciting European and African locales. Detective Harry Hole (pronounced "Hō-la" in Norwegian) has been promoted to inspector and is on the trail of a assassin wielding a Märklin, a big German gun that leaves its targets in nasty shape. This book features flashbacks to World War Two, a pizza parlor frequented by skinheads, a drunken office party, and a one-winged bird named Helge. Although Harry is an alcoholic, he is able to stay on the wagon long enough to get to the bottom of this mystery. I love that he wears a Joy Division t-shirt while he works out at the gym. Jo Nesbø has written seven Harry Hole mysteries and only two have been translated into English so far. The other five are something to look forward to. The next title to be translated into English, Nemesis, will be released in 2008. --Barb P.
