One Good Turn

Scottish/English author Kate Atkinson lands her retired police detective and private investigator Jackson Brodie in Edinburgh during the Fringe Festival. Now that he’s a millionaire with a villa in France, he doesn’t need to get involved in shady dealings. But, naturally, while waiting in line at a fringe event, he witnesses a road rage incident and gets sucked into a multi-layered plot involving a cleaning service, a builder of shoddy houses, an author, a comedian, and several thugs. It works out okay because Jackson’s girlfriend, who is appearing in a fringe theater piece, is too busy with rehearsals and pub crawling to spend much time with him. The plot twists and turns at a fast pace, and the characters, even the bad guys, are charmingly drawn. Atkinson’s next Jackson Brodie book is called When Will There Be Good News? and will be published in August 2008. --Barb P.
