The Echo Maker
Richard Powers wrote this eerie juxtaposition of natural history and human dynamics. Set near the Platte River in Nebraska, this book is full of information about sand hill cranes and neurology in addition to being a fascinating study of human emotions. I wasn’t too thrilled with some of the characterizations (the neurologist’s wife’s conversational style was too weird to be true), but the story moved quickly and the ending paid off—I never guessed who wrote the note. --Barb P.
