Blackwater

By Kerstin Ekman, translated from the Swedish by Joan Tate. This is another great Scandinavian murder mystery. It’s a psychological thriller set during the midsummer holiday in Sweden. Atmospheric in the extreme, it is a snapshot of a lifestyle that is very different from ours—along with a very creepy murder or two. Nature and human dynamics are very present in this page turner. (Ekman has also written an historical fiction tetrology about a farming town in rural Sweden, which has been translated into English.) --Barb P.
