A Trace of Smoke

This thriller by Rebecca Cantrell is set in 1931 Berlin. Hannah Vogel is a 32-year-old crime reporter for the Berliner Tageblatt. Hannah discovers early in the book that her brother Ernst has been murdered. After their unhappy childhood with an abusive father, Ernst had become part of the Berlin cabaret scene. Hannah realizes that Ernst's unfortunate involvement with an assortment of gay Nazis may have led to his downfall. In the midst of her crime-solving adventures, is Hannah falling in love with rich banker, Boris? His big black Mercedes; lovely suburban home; and fantastic cook, Frau Inge, add to Boris' allure.--Barb P.
