Abide With Me

A lyrical, poetic page turner by Elizabeth Strout, the author of Olive Kitteridge, this novel, like her others, is set in New England, and the setting is a large part of the book's appeal. The bleak winter sadness of the story and setting are a nice juxtaposition with the redemption at the end. The characters are finely drawn, easy to connect with, and believable, although, just like in real life, some are total jerks. I found this to be a profound and moving story, unlike some of the professional reviewers, who cited "gloom and spitefulness." This novel is perfect for winter reading and it's named after my favorite funeral hymn, to boot. --Barb P.
