The Man in the Wooden Hat

Jane Gardam's Old Filth is back. This is the story of Edward "Old Filth" and Betty Macintosh Feathers, this time told from Betty's perspective. Set in Hong Kong and England, the narrative spans the time period from the end of World War Two through the handover of Hong Kong from the British to the Chinese government and beyond. Gardam describes British expatriate life in Hong Kong in as much lyrical detail as she describes Betty and Filth's pastoral retirement in Donheads. I laughed at the somewhat Shakespearean names of some of the characters, including loveable Judge Pastry Willy and lawyer and archvillian Terry Veneering.--Barb P.
