Still Midnight

Glaswegian Denise Mina has created a new detective, DS Alex Morrow. Alex doesn’t get along with her coworkers, she gets pulled off cases by her supervisor, her colleague DS Bannerman is a total git, and to top it all off, she is miserably unhappy in her marriage. But somehow she keeps getting up and going to work every morning. In this first of what I hope will be a series, Alex needs to figure out why three inept gangsters think they can collect a major ransom by kidnapping small-time shopkeeper Aamir Anwar from the bosom of his family. Mina's description of the house where Aamir is kept pending his ransom being paid has got to be one of the grittiest and most disgusting I've ever read. This fast-paced thriller will keep you guessing to the very end.--Barb P.
