So Much for That

This latest novel by Lionel Shriver isn’t epistolary like We Need to Talk About Kevin, and it doesn’t have alternating chapters depending on what the heroine decides to do, like The Post-Birthday World did. It is a relatively straightforward narrative about a fabulous, long suffering guy named Shep, who is not only handy and rich, he is also good looking. His wife, his sister, and his best friend give him nothing but grief, but somehow things work out okay in the end for Shep. Set in New York City; Connecticut; and Pemba Island, Tanzania, So Much For That is autobiographical in that the character of Glynis is based on Shriver’s friend, Terri. The book includes many long diatribes concerning the U.S. medical coverage system.--Barb P.
