Adventure novelist Geoffrey Jenkins (1920-2001) was called South Africa's answer to Ian Fleming. In A Grue of Ice a British ex-navy captain turned oceanographer is ensnared in a megalomaniac's mysterious quest in the storm-tossed South Atlantic Ocean. Racing from Tristan da Cunha to Bouvet Island to the Antarctic pack ice, it's an old-fashioned adventure yarn that still thrills. -- János.
